We are currently in the process of developing our website (www.udri.org ) The website intends to provide free access to information and data on the city of Mumbai to researchers, students and citizens to enable them network with other groups for civic change. An online catalogue of our collection, (statistical data, drawings, journals, magazines, books, films, photograph gallery and other multimedia resources) under one roof to assist researchers wishing to use our Centre. 3. Kavita Shanbhag has a very interesting
and useful website www.childraise.com
for children with disabilities. Kavita is the co-ordinator of Samman,
www.ieasamman.org/aboutus.html ,
an epilepsy support group since 1991 of www.indianepilepsyassociation.org/Mumbai_act.html .
I was unaware of several things. 1
out of 100 Indians suffer from epilepsy! Epileptics have extremely
low self-esteem as they are teased as children, have great difficulty
getting married, and also have a very tough time getting a job. Considered
a stigma rather than a medical problem, many keep their condition a
secret thus depriving themselves as well as the cause of epilepsy of
the support it needs and deserves.
Samman
would appreciate help in the following ways:
- volunteers / event mgt
- a sponsor has agreed to support a musical program at Shanmukhananda
Hall on Jan 8 to enable fundraising but Samman is a small org and basically
since its own members are epileptic, they need volunteers and, in fact,
would like to know of an org who can manage the entire event.
- counselling resources
- pyscho-social and spiritual counselling resources for this group
which meets every Saturday would be useful
- support of schools
- they have a 1 hour workshop Share the World to sensitise children
- support of clubs
- they have 2 solo plays of 10 min each which they would love to stage
(were invited to Bangkok too)
- subsidised medicines
for those who can't afford would be great
Kavita
is very interested if some org can donate and support a modified
van that disabled people can phone and
call for their travel use when they need. The
van would be adapted to hold a wheelchair, etc. There
is no such facility in Mumbai!
Kavita is publishing a resource book
- Journey to Empowerment - and also greeting
cards to help Prasad a teenager with Spinal Muscular
Atrophy. Support her by buying these. Do also sell your own products
through www.childraise.com
and help the cause.
Not only is Kavita's own story ( www.childraise.com/aboutus.Htm )
inspiring, but it is amazing to see this ever-smiling lady
do so many things while being in a demanding full-time job! Her email
id is kavitashanbhag@yahoo.com.

running JCB machines for 50 hours in a village pond having water spread

running cost of JCB machines
for 50 hrs @ Rs 600 per hrs works out to Rs 30,000 , out of which Rs

Environmental
Sanitation Programme at
Slums
in Mumbai The
slums in city of Mumbai faces the problem of poor environmental sanitation
and as a result children and adult suffer from diarrhea, worm infestation,
respiratory infection, Malaria and skin infection. Child
eye care charitable trust
is implementing health programme which focuses on bringing down child
morbidity & Mortality. Along with health activities like immunization,
Vit. A prophylaxis, iron & folic acid distribution, underfive clinic
growth monitoring, supplementary feeding for malnourished children, haemoglobin
testing for mothers and children, health education and nutrition education
sessions are held for mothers. The
stress is on keeping environment clean and improve their child feeding
and rearing practices. The
literacy classes are conducted for adult women, non-formal classes for
adolescent girls and balwadi is run for preschool children. Ongoing
health education activities with 3 existing Mahila Mandals
in one slum has helped the trust in motivating 56 families disposing their
daily wet garbage in their vermiculture pots.
With the help of Rotary Club cotton bags and thick plastic bags
are distributed to this families.
They collect their dry waste from house in plastic bag and for
buying grocery and vegetables use cotton bag.
They do not use thin plastic bags. Out
of three Mahila Mandal, one Mahila Mandal has taken initiative to appoint
labourers who clean their gutters and latrines and maintain their area
clean. They collect Rs. 10/-
per month per family towards the salary of labourer.
In addition they have motivated the families to put tiles over
the open gutter as a result the entire lane remains clean.
Child Eye Care Charitable trust has been able to motivate them
to keep their area clean. About
10 lanes are maintained well. Mumbai
Municipal Corporation sends Tempo on two sides of community at fixed time
every day and community women dump their additional garbage (which can
not be used in vermiculture pot) in the Tempo.
Child
Eye Care Charitable Trust is working at present in four slum pockets.
Mahila Mandal and Youth groups are motivated to keep the area clean.
Although we are making continuous effort to make the area clean,
there are certain problems beyond our control like: 1)
To give Vermiculture pots to every family is required, since the
trust is short of funds. The
cost per pot per family (inclusive of soil, culture and plant) is only
Rs. 100/- 2)
To give cotton bags, to buy grossary and vegetables and thick plastic
bags to collect dry waste, the cost per set (one cotton bag + one plastic
bag) per family is only Rs. 60/- 3)
To give cleanliness equipments to Mahila Mandal. Four sets per
slum area. Cost of one set
is Rs. 650/- Child
Eye Care Charitable Trust
is at present working in four slum pockets.
If the help is given for 50 families in each of the slum area as
a pilot project, it will motivate other families and improve the environmental
sanitation. The
cost of the project will be as follows. 1)
Vermiculture pots : for 50 families in all four slums 200
x 100 = 20,000/- 2)
Supply of cotton and
thick plastic bags to 50 families in four slums 200
x 60 = 12,000/- 3)
Set of equipments for cleanliness for four areas 16
x 650 = 10400/-
TOTAL BUDGET 1) + 2) + 3)
= 42400/- This
help will go a long way in changing slum environment with the help of
community participation. A
line of reply sent at gopajay@hotmail.com
will help us in planning. Dr.
Kothari |

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS INTRODUCTION The Bombay Community Public Trust appeals to Trusts, Corporate Houses and individuals to sponsor the professional education of an underprivileged child in Mumbai. BACKGROUND The hopes and aspirations of the underprivileged youth are in no way different from those of more privileged homes. However, in today’s competitive world, admission to professional courses is extremely difficult. Under-privileged students are at a double disadvantage; they usually come from municipal or state-aided schools which are often dysfunctional and also come from families with limited financial resources. Thus they are unable to get admission to highly competitive courses, or even when they do get it, are unable to pay the fees. They are deprived of the tool – education - that provides employment and livelihood opportunities. Since 1994, the Bombay Community Public Trust (BCPT) has been giving H T Parekh Memorial Scholarships to outstanding girl students in schools run by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Ranging from Rs. 2400 to Rs. 9000, the scholarships enable bright girls to complete their education up to graduation. BCPT is now keen to add a new dimension to this educational activity by initiating scholarships for underprivileged youth for professional courses at the graduate level. BCPT has also been administering the BCPT-Rajni Patel Smriti Awards from 2002 onwards. It is proposed to provide financial support to bright students who have achieved academic excellence by overcoming social and educational hurdles. This support will give them entry to professional courses that are otherwise unaffordable to them. The average tuition and other fees for a seat generally ranges between Rs.25000 and Rs.35000 approximately. (Rs 2500 to Rs. 3000 p.m.) It takes between 4-6½ years to complete professional courses at the graduate level. OBJECTIVE: To institute professional education scholarships for under-privileged youth Trusts / Corporate Houses / individuals can partner with BCPT to support the cause of professional education to the under-privileged youth; thereby participating in the development of an underprivileged individual and also contributing towards enhancing equity of access to education in the city. You could partner with BCPT in the under mentioned ways: Establish a Fund of Rs.3.00 lakh or more in memory of a dear one. The Fund will be entitled “(Your Name)-BCPT Professional Education Scholarship Fund. The annual interest earned on the fund will be given to one or more students, in a field of your choice. Annually sponsor the fees of 1 or more youth in a field of your choice. IDENTIFICATION OF CANDIDATES AND CRITERIA OF SELECTION I. Students will be identified from the Merit List of the HSC Board, Mumbai Division. II. Students will be selected based on the following parameters.; a) Performance in Std.XII exams b) Continuous good academic record at school c) Performance in the entrance/qualifying examination for professional course, if any d) Below 20 years of age e) Family income f) Hobbies, interests and participation in extra-curricular activities g) Performance at an interview The awards will be given after admission to the courses is ascertained. OUTCOME Individual students will be given an opportunity to pursue their career goals, which coming from under-privileged section of the society, they otherwise may not have had. PM Karuna to conduct stray dog sterilisations in Mumbai with a mobile van. Karuna, an active animal welfare organisation, has already collected 2.5 lakhs towards a mobile surgical van and need 3.5 lakhs more. Corporates, and individuals are invited to donate. Any amount is welcome. Large donations will be acknowleged on the outside of the surgical van. The van will be used as a mobile sterilisation
unit. Arvind Shah of Karuna says his plan is to go to various housing
societies and sterilise all the strays in their own environment. The animals
will be operated on the spot and kept in the portable recovery cages.
While Karuna's staff will ensure care, the housing society will be expected
to do its part by providing Two days a week will be reserved for sterilisations since the recovery period for the dogs is 4 - 5 days. | | Adopt a Garden: www.nmmconline.com/english/services/gardensShow.php is an interesting site in English and Marathi of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. NMMC has 115 gardens and a 16000 trees planting program. Work has begun only in 25 gardens so NMMC has a scheme whereby individuals or corporates can help beautify Navi Mumbai. | | Hello uncle and
aunty, My name is Shilpa love to play ..and study. I am five years old and live in the slums of Mumbai. My father works with a grain grocer and mother is a housewife. I was born a normal child, but when I was one year old, I fell off the bed . and lost my hearing ability. One day, the teachers of Save The Children India (STCI), a voluntary not-for-profit organization, visited my house and shared with my parents the facilities of the Special Care Centre, like special teachers, small group of 5-7 children studying together, guiding on how parents can communicate with children like me, yoga classes, importance of physical and vocational education, art & craft, cultural programs etc. Since then, I have been studying at the Special Care Centre, which is located in the Drive-in theatre at Bandra in Mumbai. Like me there are 213 other children who benefit from this Special Care Centre. The Centre caters to the rehabilitative needs of children who are either hearing and speech impaired or mentally challenged. The Centre also provides us with a school bus, formal and non-formal education, pre-vocational training, health check-ups, mid-day meal facilities, speech therapy, self-help skills and the ability to integrate with normal children. My Special Care Centre building is being demolished and converted into a commercial premise. STCI have obtained a plot of land and begun constructing a new school for children like me with facilities like special sound proof classrooms, speech therapy room, childrens clinic, physiotherapy, occupational therapy etc. This school will be ready by April 2005. 23rd September 2004, is World Deaf Day, and I on behalf of all my friends at the Special Care Centre request you to pledge your support for construction of our new school, by either of the following ways: Sponsor one sq. ft. of the construction Rs. 1750/- Sponsor one block of construction Rs. 501/- Support with material donations like cement, steel, furniture etc Sponsor cost of making a classroom, vocational training room etc We also invite you to visit our centre and, on behalf of Tejas, Archana, Neelam, Samran and all other children at the Special Care Centre, we thank you for your love and support. Your special child, Shilpa P.S. Save The Children India is a non-profit organization established in 1988 and has been working towards the empowerment of underprivileged women and children, with its health and education programmes. Apart from the Special Care Centre mentioned above, STCI runs 70balwadis in the slums of Mumbai, 25 vocational training centers for adolescent girls, a 40bed hospital in Sastur (near Solapur) etc. For more information visit www.savethechildrenindia.com or email our founder director Mrs. Vipula Kadri at info@savethechildrenindia.com . First five years of any child are crucial
for overall development, especially for language & speech. Nilam Patel
Bahushrut Foundation has plans to offer free
home-based training programme for parents in training their deaf babies,
through distance education. This would enable an early start in the training
& ensure normal development in terms of language & speech. This
in turn would make mainstream education possible & opens doors for
higher education & subsequently equal opportunities. Due to financial
constraints this project has not been taken up yet. Contact: Nilam Patel
