The Stephen High School for the Deaf and Aphasic
Brief
History:
The
Stephen
High School for the deaf and
Aphasic was established in the year 1957, by a private charitable
Trust, which was patronized by the Archbishop of Bombay.
Which was functioning at DeSa
Hospital Building
, 15th
Dady Seth Road , Girgaon, Mumbai.
Since this was residence the school did not have much opportunities
for expansion. The Archbishop of Mumbai who was the patron
of the school provided land at the existing place. Montfort
Brother of St. Gabriel who are the pioneers in the education
of the deaf and blind, took over the institution in the
year 1996, and made marvelous changes in providing good
education facilities to the children despite various financial
constraints. The facilities and provisions provided to the
children has no doubt created a lasting impact on their
minds, but it becomes necessary to provide them with better
facilities and bright future in changing times.
School
Today:
The Montfort
Brothers of St.Gabriel, a religious congregation dedicated
to the education and welfare of children and youth especially
these abandoned by the society have been managing the institution.
The Brothers run similar Institutions in the country along
with a degree college for the deaf in Madras in the state
of Tamil Nadu.
Our
Board And Staff Members:
The
Stephen
High school for the deaf and
aphasic is managed by the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel
with the help of 7 members board of Trustee with Bro. Varghese
Theknatt Provincial superior as the chairman. There are
14 full time staff working for the welfare and education
of the hearing impaired children.
Our
Mission
:
The mission
and objective is that the deaf child with an aim to develop
speech ans language and to develop total personality of
the child to give him or her education the development of
the whole person. The school offers 14 years of study leading
to S.S.C Examination other courses offered are typing, bookbinding,
screen printing, computers, drawing, dance, sports, etc.
In spite of the financial crunch the school provides best
of education to the children.
We have
moderately set up computer lab, the information technology
with the help of school net.
Future
Plan:
The Stephen
proposes to upgrade its facilities to a junior college and
then to a degree to the deaf students of Mumbai, along with
the vocational training center for the deaf.
Our resources
have limited us to move further. The students face a lot
of difficulties to commute. The smaller section children
along with the parents commute daily. Transport facility
for these special children is a felt need. The school has
limited has limited class rooms. The additional construction
to be taken up for the additional class rooms. The computer
lab needs up gradation with modern machines, to make the
teaching learning more effective. The school is taking a
lead in preparing CD for the curriculum of deaf education
on the regular exam based subjects.
How
Stephen High
School is funded:
The
Stephen
High School is being a charitable
Institution is depending on public donations. The institution
is 60% aided by the Government of Maharashtra Ministry of
social welfare 40 % of the funds are from the management,
parents and public contribution for its operation. Donations
in cash and in kind are welcome. All donations are eligible
for tax benefit under Sec 80G, Director of Income Tax (exemption)
80G (5) (vi) of the
I.T Act.
Towards
Better Services to this Special Children:
- Construction
of 2 floors on the top of the present building.
- Up
gradation of Computer Lab with a minimum of 10 computers.
- Purchase
of a L.C.D. projector.
- Purchase
of a T.V. and C.D player.
- Purchase
of a table tennis board (Table).
- Purchase
of a school bus.
- Children Park (Play Materials).
