The
Hundred Years of Growth
The Dadar school for the blind
completed 101 years of services to the community, Set up originally
by American Marathi Mission to serve the children blinded
by the Sholapur famine at the turn of the century, it has
since been catering particularly to blind girls even from
beyond Maharashtra. The Story of Dadar School for the Blind
has been one of continued challenge. It grew steadily, servicing
many a ricissitude to become one of the foremost centre of
education and rehabilitation of blind girls.
From the modest one room, it
moved in 1920 to its own building which houses the school
and the hostel. To expand educational amenities & hostel
facilities two new buildings were constructed on the school
campus and the name of the school was changed to Smt. Kamla
Mehta Dadar School for the Blind in the year 1986.
The school imparts academic
education from pre-school to S.S.C. & College going students
along with hostel facility to visually impaired girls coming
from varied socio economic background belonging to any caste,
creed & religion. From June 1998 hostel facility is provided
up to graduation.
In the year 1989, the school
has received the State Government Award “Dalit Mitra” for
excellence in service.
The management sincerely thanks
the unflinching support of the communities and the authorities.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES AT GLANCE
PRE-PRIMARY BRAILLE CLASS:
This Class is well equipped
with beautiful apparatus for sensory training.
The children get in consideration of fun playing in
the Doll’s house. This class also helps children to know &
get used to the school atmosphere, which enables them to adjust
to school setting.
LIBRARY:
Braille as a medium is very
complex and boring to learn. To encourage effective reading
in Braille students a modern “Braille Library” has been set
up withy books of varied interests and knowledge. The library
is well furnished with the financial support from the Government
of India.
HOBBY CENTRE:
Handwork provides an excellent
media to build children to express their creative ideas into
aesthetic form. They are taught painting, modeling with plasticine
& paper-mache; also creating decorative articles in beads,
knitting and plastic, rexin & jute bag making.
MUSIC & DANCE:
A great deal of emphasis is
laid on music and dance. The students are prepared for The
Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya Sangeet Examination.
The school orchestra is very popular and it has given several
public performances. The
students are trained in folk dances like Rasa, Beda, Tippani,
& Diya and these dances are well received and appreciated.
HOME SCIENCE:
This section is well equipped
with modern kitchen aids & gadgets such as gas, mixers,
electric ovens, etc. Students are trained to handle these
as normal household responsibility. They are also trained
in cooking, preservation of food and other household chores.
SCIENCE LABORATORY:
Opportunity are provided to
students right from 1st standard to performed experiments
in General Science in the laboratory which is well equipped
(self sufficient)
GYMNASIUM:
Physical education enhances
mobility and free movement. Students are indulged in various
Gymnastic activities such as Rope, Mallkhamb, Swimming, Drill,
Dumbbells, Yoga and a variety of Indoor & Outdoor games.
This is done to promote confidence and develop a healthy attitude
towards life.
LANGUAGE LABORATORY:
Language Laboratory assists
in improving their languages. Students are taught languages
like English, Marathi and Hindi. Individual practice of listening
to correct pronunciation, sentences & imitation of the
same simultaneously will help for prompt conversation &
to create self confidence which will enhance job opportunities.
RECREATION:
For Recreation students have
a variety of “Indoor Games” such as puzzles, cards with Braille
marks, snakes & ladders which embossed lines, dice with
dots and plastic blocks. These games also help to improve
touch sense, finger co-ordination, concentration and memorization
leading to intelligence.
AWARDS:
10th Annual Talent
Contest organized by Lion Club of Churchgate, the school won
the ‘Smt. Sumitra S. Jhaveri Memorial Rotating Trophy.
MEDICAL FUND:
It is noticed that some students
are undernourished and require lot of medicines as well as
tonics during the year. Therefore we have decided to raise
funds towards medical Aid.
We will be happy to receive
donation of Rs. 1,000/- and above towards Medical Fund, and
the interest will be utilized for above purpose.
SPONSORSHIP FUND:
Donation of Rs. 5000/- is accepted
towards Sponsorship Fund. Donation received is invested in
Fixed Deposit and the interest is utilized for sponsoring
one student, for 10 years and then after new student will
be again sponsored by routine.
PRIZE FUND:
Donations are accepted from
Rs. 500/- onwards for Prize Fund which is invested in Fixed
Deposit & interest accrued will be utilized for prizes
to the students standing first in Annual Examination or standing
first & second in various competitions like Braille reading
and writing, Recitation, Elocution, Vocal and Instrumental
Music and Sports.
