For several
years a group of lawyers and social activists had envisioned
establishing a comprehensive human rights centre that would
fight for access to justice for poor people – particularly
women, children, minority and vulnerable communities.
A Centre
that would deepen and widen the understanding of human rights
within the country and assist in the creation of laws and
policies that will bring about a more equitable society.
With this
in mind the India Centre for Human Rights and Law (ICHRL)
was established in 1997.
ICHRL defines rights not only as civil and political
rights but social, economic, environmental and cultural rights.
The main
areas of work of the Centre are:
·
Legal aid and public interest litigations (PIL)
·
Investigations, monitoring and responding to
human rights violations
·
Para-legal training, specialized training and
documentation
·
Campaigns and advocacy
·
Publications
Since 1997
the Centre has carved itself a niche in certain key areas
of human rights and law.
These being:
·
Criminal Justice and Prisoners’ Rights
·
Gender Justice and Prevention of Sexual Harassment
in the Workplace
·
Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Rights
·
Child Rights
·
Disability Rights
·
Peace and Democracy
·
Toxics and Waste
The Centre
also runs two initiatives from its premises:
·
The Indian People’s Tribunal on Environment
and Human Rights
·
The Mumbai Med waste Action Group
In addition
to this in the next few years ICHRL will be expanding into
three new areas of human rights:
·
Governance and Accountability
·
Globalisation and Law
·
The Centre is also in the process of establishing
a human rights news feature service
