HOPE (Here On Project Environment) is a programme of the Rotary Club of Thane.  The major objectives of the programme are to impart nature education, increase awareness about nature & environment and to undertake activities for conservation of our natural environment.


The activities conducted / proposed to be conducted by HOPE include:


·      Organizing seminars / talks / exhibitions / slide – film shows.

  • Organizing nature camps / trails.
  • Starting or assisting Nature Clubs in Schools.
  • Tree Plantation
  • Campaigns for prevention of degradation of lakes, creeks & forests around Thane.
  • Programmes for waste recycle
  • Encouraging / supporting Research Projects

Since its inception 6 years ago, HOPE has conducted over 250 programmes and has emerged at the forefront of environment activity in Thane.


Some of the major outcomes of HOPE’s efforts have been:


  • RITUCHAKRA – A nature park – cum – estuarine sanctuary at Kalwa Creek.
  • NISARGA JATRA Exhibitions – 1999, 2000, 2001
  • Maharashtra Rajya Pakshimitra Sammelan
  • Library of Nature Clubs in Schools
  • Designing of School Syllabi for Environment Education.
  • VRUKSHAVALLI Exhibitions– 2001, 2002 in association with Thane Municipal Corporation
  • Launching of integrated environmental restoration activity in a tribal hamlet in Wada District.  

Additionally HOPE has conducted following important programmes:


  • Workshops on Snakes
  • Workshops of Insects & Butterflies
  • Workshops on Environment Education for Teachers of Secondary Schools
  • Workshops for Volunteers for Nature Education
  • Campaign for containment of Plastic Carry Bag Nuisance
  • Fixing name plates on trees in Thane town & Yeoor Hills 

HOPE has collaborated with the Forest Department (Information centers at Borivli Tiger Safari, Karnala Bird Sanctuary, Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary) & other NGO’s like BNHS, WWF, Hariyali, Jidnyasa to conduct nature education, awareness & conservation activities.


Starting 5th June, 1999, the World Environment Day, HOPE launched a news bulletin ‘HOPE VARTA’.


The activities of HOPE are conducted by expert naturalists & keen nature lovers.  Many of these persons are members of organizations such as Bombay Natural History Society, World Wide Fund for Nature, Friends of Trees, Friends of Birds, Friends of Snakes, etc.  The Rotary Club of Thane provides the financial & administrative support.

HOPE meets every Saturday at 7.00 p.m.  The meetings are open to all.
