September 2006 Nonprofit-of-the-Month - 'Association for Social Health in India'. (Maharashtra State Branch)

The "Association for Social Health in India" (ASHI), conceived and founded in 1955, is an institution dedicated " to assist women in distress".
It is a part of the all-India body registered under the Society's Act No. XXI of 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950. The association was registered on June 27, 1957.

The association has been established with the aim of rehabilitating women in distress. It has worked for the benefit of disadvantaged women who are in need of shelter, protection, medical care, counselling, etc. through various services that it provides.

One of the unique projects that the Association for Social Health in India has been running is a "short-stay home" called, Sukh Shanti, in Mankhurd, opposite BARC Colony since 1978. This "short-stay home" provides shelter for a short period of 3 to 9 months to the distressed women and rehabilitates them to be useful citizens of the country. During their short stay, they are trained in some occupation or craft which can give them an opportunity to stand on their own. They are also given health education (including on AIDS and HIV) to promote a happy family life. During the period, April 2005 - March 2006, the total inmates in Sukh Shanti were 177 women and 20 children.

Helpline for Distressed Women: Under the Central Social Welfare Board, ASHI has started a 24-hour Helpline for women called Swadhar (Tel. no.: 10920) in co-operation with MTNL since 2003. Trained staff who answer the Helpline network with local NGOs and Govt. bodies such as the Police to provide timely help to distressed women who call.

One of the long-cherished aims of the Association has been to build a hostel for low-income women and it ASHI hopes that with the support of well-fishers, this dream will soon be realised.
