Notes: MAVA is India’s first voluntary organization (Estb. 1993)
run by sensitive and concerned men working on gender issues, mainly
violence against women (which have been largely seen in society
as women’s issues.) The first of its kind in India, MAVA considers
men as significant players in overcoming gender oppression and inequality
in patriachal India. The organization aims at bringing about attitudinal
change especially in men, thereby preventing/stopping violence and
abuse of women. Based in Mumbai and functioning all over Maharashtra,
MAVA provides personalized counseling and guidance to needy men
and women facing marital conflict & other gender-based problems,
conducts gender-sensitization programs for varied target groups
(residential colonies, business establishments and corporates, NGOs,
youth bodies, mahila mandals, schools and colleges) esp. boys &
young men. For the last 9 years, it has been bringing out an annual
magazine in Marathi containing expressions exclusively by men on
gender issues. MAVA also organizes workshops on self-defence for
girls & women, empowering them with simple techniques against
potential attacks by men. MAVA works in collaboration with leading
women’s groups in the city including Stree Mukti Sanghatana, Akshara,
Sakhya, Sophia’s Centre for Women’s Studies, Dilaasa, Special Cell
for women in Distress, Swadhar and the Maharashtra State Women’s
Commission. Currently, MAVA is focusing on projects reaching out
to boys and young men, enabling them to adopt alternative, positive
models of masculinity that promote gender sensitivity and prevent
violence and abuse of women. Various youth-friendly and mass non-threatening
platform like film festivals, street-plays, study circles, discussion
groups & poster exhibitions are being used. MAVA soon plans
to start a Counseling, Guidance and Resource Centre at Andheri open
