Volunteer Area / Location / Who

Do read “ experience the joy of giving “ and add your details via Volunteers - add your profile .

For Volunteering possibilities in orphanages & shelters, see www.karmayog.com/lists/orphanages.htm

For Volunteering in old age homes, see www.karmayog.com/lists/oah.htm

I would appreciate if you would volunteer for any of the following to increase and improve the info on www.karmayog.com  1. Interview NGOs in your area or in the category of your interest. The basic idea is to prepare a note on an NGO which makes it easy for people to have a better understanding of the NGO, it's activities, etc. I have a general set of questions and points. Writing skills are not needed. The note can be structured as in www.karmayog.com/ngoproform.htm or unstructured such as a magazine article.
2. Update NGO lists of different categories which are in www.karmayog.com/lists/ngos.htm . Work involved would be to surf the net and to phone ngo's.
3. Compile useful data of any type in the area of your interest which could be of help to beneficiaries, donors, or ngo's.    All the work would be finally displayed so as to be accessible free of charge to anyone.   There is no time deadline for whatever work you take up.   We can pay nominal amounts esp. to cover all expenses.
Please email or phone me to discuss further.
  Thanks.  Vinay 22000004 98200-29884

We would greatly appreciate if someone can take the trouble to email news pertaining to NGOs which are covered by newspapers. We need the headline, date, the article itself, and the url of the article.   Pl email to info@karmayog.com . Pl send each news item individually in the body of the email itself and not as an attachment. Some news websites are www.samachar.com and www.ptinews.com We would prefer Mumbai or national level news. We are also willing to pay a nominal amount. Pl speak to our Vibha on 22013535.    Thanks. For those of you who want to volunteer at Pratham (www.pratham.org),
these are a few activities that I thought of.  I have kept in mind the time factor for volunteers so there might be few things that are time intensive like evaluation of a project etc and others involve minimal
time e.g. weekend activity with children.

Please feel free if you want the activities in detail.
1.      Read to me Saturdays: Where the volunteers could read stories to the children.
2.      Art and Craft day: The volunteers can teach a special craft to the children. It could be small thing they know, kite making, flower making, book making, etc. It will be better if it is a low cost item.
3.      Spread the word day: It is a day decided by every one to talk about Pratham and its activities to one more person and ask them to join our guest list.
4.      Recommendation day: The volunteer is supposed to visit Pratham classes and leave a sealed note at the zonal office about his/her views about what he saw and what recommendations he/she has.
5.      Write a letter day: The volunteers describe what they saw in our classes. It has to be a short note and will be put up on the Pratham website.
6.      Write stories: Pratham is always in need of stories. Pratham Books could publish the stories with an acknowledgement to you J
7.      Expertise help: Pratham is always in need of people who could
make use of their professional skill in the organisation e.g.
database management, help with PR etc.
8.      Evaluators: We are always in need of external program evaluators who could evaluate a project or a class overtime to present to us their views. This helps us to better our programs and
gives the volunteers a good field experience.
9.      Forming an active like minded group: We could start with various activities to promote Pratham's work and its intensions. It will be a good base to exchange ideas amongst the group.
Best,

Radhika
 "Radhika Iyengar" <radhikaiyengar@gmail.com>

PS: These are only a few activity's that I could think of based on my experience, but Pratham caters to a wide variety of backgrounds. I am an economist by training and am a full time volunteer with Pratham.
There are Hotel management graduates, computer graduates, MBA's  who work at Pratham also.

'Young Giants' is an international organization of social work for men and women aged 15 to 25 years that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship, encourages high ethical standards in business and promotes international understanding and peace.

Young Giants is a program of Giants International headed by Padma Shri Nana Chudasama. The Young Giants work under the guidance of their local Giants Groups. This association of young groups with their 'parent' Giants Group has existed for several years in India and Europe. Groups draw members from the community or are organized as an extracurricular activity for college students.

Young Giants, conducts meetings, which sometimes feature speakers,  cultural activities, discussions, and networking with other organisations. Giants utilize a majority of their time for social work, social events, and professional and leadership development of members.

Based on these lines, Young Giants of Byculla work under the aegis of Giants Group of Byculla.

This group was installed on 23rd July 2003 and has been instrumental in organising a variety of activities. Attached herewith please find more info on Young Giants and the project Young Giants of Byculla has done.

We do require the support and membership of people between the age group of 15 to 25 years to make our group stronger and more efficient. The membership fee is Rs. 650/- (upto December 2005). This is the administration fund that we collect to carry out various activities such as Unit/Federation Conferences, Meetings, other communications etc. The money required for organising projects is taken care of by the fund raisers we do.

We request persons who are interested in real social work to join us. Do check out the attached files for further details.

Eye Bank co-ordination and Research centre is working towards alleviating corneal blindness.it is affiliated to the International Federation of eye and Tissue banks baltimore USA and a member of the Eye Bank association of India. EBCRC has a state of the art laboratory for processing eyeballs. The corneas are processed, evaluated and distributed to the waiting list of corneal blind patients. When one person donates eyes two corneal blind persons get the Gift of Sight.

EBCRC  requires your assistance in getting Doctors to help in enucleation of eyes.We need volunteers to help in the cause of Eye donation. As per the human transplant act only medical practicioners can enulceate eyes from a dead person.(and not trained technicians as is done all over the world.) If General practitioners before issuing the Death Certificate requests the next of kin to donate the eyes of the deceased, I am sure the Eye donation Movement in our city will leap forward and there will not be any corneal blind person in mumbai. people normally listen to their family doctors and would carry out the noble act of Eye Donation.

Indicorps Pilots Short-Term Volunteer Workshop:

As part of our commitment to enhance the capacity of Indian non-profit
organizations to mobilize and effectively engage volunteers, Indicorps
conducted a workshop on "Effective Volunteer Management and Utilization" in
Ahmedabad on June 7th, 2004.  Twelve organizations and over thirty
individuals from the greater Ahmedabad region attended.  The participatory
workshop was designed find ways to make local and international volunteer
involvement more productive.  Topics discussed included: strategies to
improve communication with volunteers, management of voluntary resources,
designing well-structured volunteer opportunities, selecting and preparing
volunteers, and exploring the similarities and differences between the
domestic and the international volunteer.  Thanks to Animal Help
Foundation, Center for Environment Education, Delhi Public Schools,
Environmental Sanitation Institute, Manav Sadhna, Motibai Devraj Kanyashala
Trust, Mitra, Pratham, SEWA, Setu Developmental Intervention Centre,
Samvedana, and Visamo Kids for making the day a success.

Forthcoming Resources:

Indicorps is working on a web-based solution that makes it easier for
people to find potential opportunities, In the meantime, we are compiling a
handbook on volunteering in India intended to assist the international
volunteer in his/her period of service.  Based on discussions and
experience with over thirty international volunteers and over fifty
organizations, extensive research on the voluntary sector in India, and
examination of various volunteer programs and resources, the handbook is
designed as a tool to prepare the international volunteer for some of the
challenges of serving in India.  It is expected to be available in the
coming months.  Contact short-term@indicorps.net for more details.

A New Format:

For this newsletter, Indicorps has decided to rearrange the short-term
opportunities according to field of work.  However, we recommend that you
review ALL of the projects to find something that appeals to you.  Many
projects and opportunities are not easily categorized, and many
organizations have projects that cut across different fields.  We realize
that this makes the newsletter quite lengthy, and we are exploring
possibilities of moving to a web-based system soon.  The projects have been
listed in the following categories: Animal Welfare; Education (Urban,
Rural, and Special); Fundraising and Awareness, Governance, Policy, and
Advocacy; Health Care Services, Micro-Credit; Product Development and
Marketing; Rural Development, Technology; and Other.

We hope the new format works for you, please send us your feedback at
short-term@indicorps.org.

********************************************************

SHORT-TERM PROJECT LISTINGS

Below is the list of short-term volunteer opportunities (6 weeks-6 months)
that Indicorps has compiled for this newsletter.  Please note that the
short-term volunteer opportunities are NOT short Indicorps fellowships, and
should NOT be confused with Indicorps' yearlong fellowship
program.  Indicorps is not responsible for and does not manage, verify, or
endorse any of the short-term programs in the list below.  This is only an
avenue for interested individuals to contact organizations that have
short-term volunteer needs.  Indicorps' goal in administering this list is
to strengthen the volunteer sector's capacity to select and manage
volunteers on its OWN.  If you are interested in applying for a project,
please contact the organizations DIRECTLY through the contact information
provided at the end of each listing.

Animal Welfare

Animal Help Foundation
Location: Ahmedabad, GJ
www.ahfindia.org

"The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated"

- Mahatma Gandhi

Animal Help Foundation (AHF) is a non-profit animal/bird welfare
organization, founded in June 2001.  AHF is for stray animals only,
providing 24-hour medical attention to ownerless, stray, and abandoned
animals, free of charge.  AHF efforts are focused on protecting animals
from cruelty and abuse, and providing veterinary services to ownerless
animals and birds.  In addition, AHF has been involved in a number of
activities to raise awareness among the general public about animal
welfare.  Animal Help Foundation aims to impact the greater society, and
help them understand the fact that animals share an equal part of our
society, and deserve appropriate care and attention.

Project: Corporate Friends Assistant:  "Corporate Friends" is a program
that targets corporations for financial assistance and support.  It is a
strategic investment which offers tangible benefits to companies,
employees, as well as our animals.  AHF seeks a volunteer to approach
corporates, give presentations, talk to the general public, and network.

Project: Group of Animal Lovers (GOAL) Coordinator: GOAL is a membership
club started by AHF, with the aim of bringing together individuals in the

to help people be responsible pet owners.  AHF seeks volunteers to increase
the scope of this program, help design activities and fundraisers, and
assist with its general coordination and development.

piloted by Animals Asia, and recently brought to India by AHF.  The idea
behind Dr. Dog is that animals, with the unconditional love and care they

therapy has proved to boost immune systems and to assist in
rehabilitation.  AHF seeks a volunteer to help spread this program in
Ahmedabad.  This would involve approaching organizations with the message

students, aged 8-12 years.  It is an educational program that allows
children to use their writing and thinking skills to imagine the feelings
and consider the abilities of other animals. It examines the history and
evolution of the human-animal relationship, and helps the students explore
alternative responses to situations in which their well being is
threatened.  Through this program, children will learn how to treat animals
as their equals: with compassion and respect.  AHF seeks a volunteer to
help coordinate this program in various schools throughout Ahmedabad.

Special Requirements: For all projects, AHF seeks enterprising youth who
have a passion for animals and a vision to really make a difference where

INSPIRATIONAL VOICES

"Service doesn't start when you have something to give.  It blossoms
naturally when you have nothing left to take"

M.K. Gandhi

"I am learning to be a student of people and their lives. I am finding an
earnest desire to understand how people tick, to understand even just a
small piece of the human condition. Most importantly, I am trying to
understand what makes people true, noble, content, and hopeful, despite an
overwhelming amount of moral degradation around them and a life full of
small, but significant struggles in their day-to-day life.

I am glad to have the occasional doubts and confusion, because each time I
am inspired again and reminded of India's own servants. This process has
established a firmer, clearer, better founded, truer conviction than
before. That is the most critical foundation for my work, otherwise I stand
nowhere".

assisting Sister Nivedita Continuing Education Centre in Rajkot, Gujarat
with a Learning on Wheels project.  For more information, visit

Volunteer Your Time
Make a REAL Difference!
Document & Preserve Cultures - Empower Indigenous People & Minorities

 www.nativeplanet.org/ngo/volunteer.htm

Native Planet has ambitious goals and is growing steadily. In order to help indigenous communities empower themselves and to continue to deliver superior documentaries, we need your help. Your effort and skills can make the difference so please share a few hours a week of your time!

Why Volunteer with Native Planet?

Because Native Planet is a small non-profit organization that relies entirely on volunteers to operate. Native Planet is still small in size, but not in scope. Among the many NGOs giving help to indigenous communities worldwide, very few focus on saving indigenous cultures and empowering them.

We believe there is a significant difference between bringing temporary assistance that will create dependency and future needs, and bringing solutions that can be implemented and managed by the communities themselves.

At Native Planet, we select groups that retain much of their traditional culture but do not receive adequate media attention or international support. We produce a documentary, we assess the local needs and problems, we nurture an "empowerment strategy", and then we promote it, supporting it with our own funds and work. Our documentation isn't just for indigenous peoples; thousands of schools, scholars, other NGOs and individuals read and use them in their own studies or trip planning. We are pleased to receive numerous emails telling us how much we've inspired our readers and hope you're one of them. We would love to welcome you to our team.

Still not sure?

Being a Project Manager involves: choosing an indigenous group with an intact distinct culture, documenting that culture, creating public awareness of its needs and problems, developing an assistance and empowerment strategy and beginning work on its implementation. For an example of an assistance and empowerment project, see what we are doing with the Mentawai. It is our goal to extend this type of work to other indigenous groups who still retain many of their traditions, but we need more project managers to do so effectively. If you’re inspired, read more about what becoming a Project Manager involves.

vRequired Skills: At Native Planet, we believe that dedication to your cause is more important than experience or skills. Both experience and skills can be gained if you care about helping indigenous people. However some skills would be particularly useful: basic computer/internet/email use, at least basic English writing skills, basic project and/or people management skills, social/communication skills (it is especially important to establish a good rapport and bond of trust with the indigenous group you will work with). Basic experience/knowledge in one of the following fields would also be of additional benefit: ecotourism, social work, indigenous cultures and issues, local laws, documentary production (text and photos), fundraising and/or previous NGO work experience.

iVolunteer along with AIESEC are hosting a "Volunteer management workshop" on the 4th of December 04
Objective of the workshop:
• To build a volunteering perspective in organization working for different causes – Understanding and sharing the issues and practices
• Roadmap to effective Volunteer Management
Background:
The challenge of the development sector today lies in tapping onto quality human resource, utilizing their skills to the maximum and creating a motivating niche for individuals within NGOs.
Volunteers are a potent resource that NGOs can use to implement projects and create community participation in development issues. As we know 'volunteerism' in today's context is not just confined to students, housewives, youth, elderly or any other such groups. We now have individuals with management background working in corporate houses contributing their knowledge and experience to the development sector. It is important to work out how best we can utilize the skills and time of these individuals who are willing to volunteer and also how we can manage them.
iVolunteer with its trained staff having vast experience in handling volunteers in diff parts of India along with AIESEC who has years of experience handing international interns in the development sector aim to share and create a platform with ngo's regarding effective volunteer management practices .

Even as we're coming to the grasp of the horrifying devastation that the tsunamis have left behind across 12 countries, the relief and rehabilitation work for several millions of survivors has to be implemented soon. The effort required to provide safe drinking water, food, medical treatment, shelter and a livelihood to the victims will be the biggest ever to be undertaken to date.

One of the important resources needed in this massive humanitarian assistance effort are volunteers. Volunteers from both local communities and outside have already begun joining hands with NGOs, local governments and other agencies to deliver relief to the survivors.

In our special coverage of the disaster on the World Volunteer Web, we provide a snapshot of what role volunteers are playing in the world's biggest relief and rehabilitation effort to date. These stories, taken from sources all over the world, again highlight the important contribution volunteers make in emergency humanitarian assistance.

You can also find out in our special coverage how you can help the tsunami victims through donations and voluntary work.

Visit the special coverage section here: http://www.worldvolunteerweb.org/dynamic/cfapps/news/tsunami.cfm

If you have any such stories or pictures of volunteers' work in the tsunami-affected areas, please send them to us at info@worldvolunteerweb.org.

Bombay Leprosy Project welcomes needs volunteers to help this NGO, in office correspondence, computer operations, office administration, fund raising etc.

But we regret not a single person turned up actually, to volunteer their services. Such a gesture would have indeed been a service to the community and to the poor leprosy patients. If this offer were to result in some social minded persons coming to BLP and offering their services, it would have meant real benefit to the leprosy patients.

The reasons for the failure could be that people are still afraid of leprosy patients and social stigma is strong even today preventing persons to work in a leprosy NGO. May be the society still needs awareness among the common people that leprosy is a disease like any other disease and it can be surely treated and cured. That it is not an infectious disease.

Wider awareness, through publicity in press media, on television and publicity in the community can prepare the people to mix freely with leprosy patients without any stigma. May be situation may improve gradually over a period of time.

But until then BLP will have to carry on its services to leprosy patients without the help of so many persons who are willing to volunteer but not for Bombay Leprosy Project.

R Ganapati

The Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CERE) in Mumbai is looking for a number of volunteers to start work immediately on the following projects:

1. Compilation of an Environmental Services Directory for Mumbai
2. Case Study of Residential Societies / ALMs

Both projects are short-term.  The first project viz Compilation of an Environmental Services Directory for Mumbai would particularly suit anyone interested in environmental issues or even otherwise it would especially suit students who are on vacation. The volunteers will start with a list that CERE already has already developed and build on that by undertaking an internet research, making phonecalls, and having meetings to collect information.  Students and individuals who are happy to work with minimal supervision are encouraged to apply, CERE will assist them initially with the work as also re-imburse all
expenses.

The second project viz Case Study of Residential Societies / ALMs is being done to locate success stories and document these. This would suit a social science/social survey/environmental studies student (or graduate) and this project could be done as a part of the student's dissertation. However non-students are also welcome to apply!

Please send an email with CV to cere_india@yahoo.co.in , marking Volunteer in Subject Box.

Many thanks,

iVolunteer - MITRA

An initiative of MITRA – iVolunteer is a platform to bring together individuals, corporate houses and Non Government Organisations (NGO) for mutual benefit. It is a credible platform to help potential volunteers find their niche` in the development sector and to help non-governmental organisations clearly articulate the role they wish volunteers to play in their organisation.

Individual Volunteering

“Can one person really make a difference?”

Well the answer is a resounding “YES!!”

A not-for-profit organisation can utilise YOUR time and skills and you will be amazed to see the IMPACT of your involvement. Regardless of how much time you have to offer or what your formal training is, iVolunteer will find the right opportunity that works for you.

You could volunteer at orphanages, old-age homes, schools, hospitals and not-for-profit organisations. As a volunteer, you will not only learn about the needs of others but more so about yourself.

The need for volunteers is never ending and a variety of opportunities are always available.

Employee Volunteering – How corporates fit in

There are many internal and external benefits for a company that encourages it’s employees to volunteer.

Employee volunteering helps increase staff morale, boost performance and improve retention rates. Employees who volunteer not only get a chance to develop personal skills but also get an opportunity to contribute to an issue that they really care about. And they feel proud of working for a company that supports society and community.

Businesses where employees are encouraged to volunteer go on to build a positive image in the community as well as with their clients and associates. Employee volunteers improve the company’s relationship with its stakeholders, with the local community in which it operates, and/or with the wider community This goes onto to show that the company believes in contributing towards the society.

In all, corporate volunteering is a winning proposition for both the employer and the employee.
