Home >> Nonprofit of the month

It is difficult for donors to select NGOs. Is the nonprofit genuine? Will my amount make a difference? What percentage of donations goes to the final beneficiaries? Will I be pestered again and again if I donate? Is there no independent organisation who evaluates and recommends NGOs?

It is difficult for NGOs to raise funds. We don't have full-time staff or volunteers for fund-raising! Whom should we approach anyway? The cost of collection is so high! Donations-in-kind are needed, but so is money. How to make people aware about our work? Is there no independent organisation who evaluates and recommends NGOs?

Well, we, at www.karmayog.com, a free platform for the nonprofit sector, carefully profile and select one deserving Mumbai nonprofit every month. We invite you to donate directly to such nonprofits. Even a small amount of Rs. 100 can make a difference! e.g. Rs. 100 x 1000 donors = Rs. 1 lakh.

Whether you are an individual or a corporate, we invite you to fill www.karmayog.org/corproform.asp?r=41 .

The Karmayog December Nonprofit-of-the-Month is Yashodhan Education Trust (YET), Thane

Yashodhan Education Trust was established in 1978 with the motive to fight illiteracy and to advance the secular education to bring national, social and self-awareness among the poor, needy and resourceless students of economically weaker section of society of vast slum area in the locality. The growing awareness and need of having an English medium school in locality inspired the establishment of Yashodhan English High School . Starting with Kindergarten in the flat of founder member and present Chairman Mr. P M Yadav, the school has progressively added classes till SSC. In year 1998 the trust has also started Marathi Medium classes till 7th Standard.

Even in absence of any aid from government, the schools is managed on ‘No Profit No Loss’ basis by charging nominal fees to students compared to other education institutions. Presently there are approximately 600 students enrolled with this coed school and 16 dedicated teachers are employed to impart education to them. The classes are conducted in twelve asbestos/tin-roofed rooms. The school boasts of a science laboratory, which has all necessary facilities for conducting SSC level practicals. With the help of Rotaract club the school has also established a computer lab. The small open space is available as a playground.

The future plans of the School include renovation of aging school infrastructure and starting the junior college of Commerce and Arts from June 2006. It received the permission from government for the junior college in year 2004, however lack of infrastructure and funding has been the constraint for the delay of the project.

Yashodhan Education Trust profile is at www.karmayog.org/yetschool

Donations to Yashodhan Education Trust are tax-exempt under Section 80 G of Income Tax Act. Renewal application for 80G certificate has been filed. Renewals are effective from date of application.

Your donation to nonprofits achieves 3 things:
    - it offers desperately-needed financial support (nonprofits like this one rely almost entirely on donations)
    - it gives encouragement to the nonprofit (and to us at Karmayog)
    - it connects you with your nobler qualities (generosity is about the giver, not the receiver)
So please do donate - however small an amount it may be e.g. Rs. 100.
