STAFF POSITIONS

1.      Position Title & Summary 

Indicorps Fellowship Support Staff (3)

Interested in helping build the leaders of tomorrow? Indicorps is looking for up to three dynamic young people to join the Field Support staff for Indicorps’ flagship fellowship program. Minimum two year commitment (June 2005 – September 2007).

Responsibilities

  • Understand & exemplify the Indicorps service philosophy and mission
  • Provide professional, logistical, and emotional support to fellows through regular communication and monthly site visits
  • Assist fellows to understand the demands/rigors of the fellowship program, and encourage them to meet personal and program deadlines
  • Identify resources & best practices to help fellows succeed
  • Organize and implement training events for fellows (orientation, bi-monthly workshops/retreats, project-specific research and resources, and informal coaching).
  • Regularly document activities, interactions, practices, & outcomes
  • Help improve Indicorps processes and programs based on field experiences
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications Desired

  • College/University Degree and 2-3 years work experience
  • Experience in the Indian voluntary sector and an understanding of grassroots development and its challenges
  • Intuitive sense of service
  • Strong communications, conflict-resolution, and human support skills
  • Fluency in English and at least one Indian language
  • Experience in India & abroad ( UK , US, or Canada preferred)
  • Ability to understand and motivate people
  • Patient, caring, resourceful, self-motivated
  • Must be willing to commit for two years

Work Environment

Supervised by a seasoned Indicorps staff member or former fellow. Work closely with a group of dynamic young people striving to be the change and help cultivate that in others. Full-time staff support team works an average of 50-60 hours per week. Travel not included. Long train/bus journeys likely.

2.      Job Title & Summary

Public Relations / Media Specialist (1)

Be the Voice of Change. Indicorps is seeking a creative public relations/media specialist, who is passionate about service and India , to help promote Indicorps’ diverse efforts in inspiring civic responsibility and mobilizing persons of Indian origin around the world to give back to India with their time and skills. As the Indicorps public relations/media specialist, you are charged with managing the “Indicorps brand” and developing a broader communications and public relations strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Understand & exemplify the Indicorps service philosophy and mission
  • Create promotional materials for current and future programs (multi-media)
  • Develop literature and articles about Indicorps or related work
  • Assist fellows in writing for publication; edit and publishing fellows’ columns
  • Draft a monthly newsletter & periodic press releases
  • Compile reports for donors & other supporters
  • Maintain the NGO contacts, media, and photo databases
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications Desired

  • College / University Degree and 2-3 years work experience
  • An in-depth understanding of the Indicorps’ philosophy and the development sector and an intuitive sense of service
  • Ability to work on materials for a global audience, including within India and abroad.
  • Creativity - ability to think outside the box
  • Impeccable writing & editing skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Computer proficiency and visual media skills including desktop publishing and video production
  • Must be willing to commit for two years ( 31 May 2005 to 31 Sept 2007 )

Work Environment

Supervised by the director of the Indicorps program. Work independently, but in conjunction with a group of dynamic young people in various programs striving to be the change and help cultivate that in others. The communications/media specialist is likely to work 55+ hours per week. Travel to project sites not included.

3.      Job Title & Summary

Project Creation Team (3)

Experience India through the amazing work of grassroots NGOs. Indicorps seeks up to 3 mature young people to travel to various sites to identify, define, and structure year-long Indicorps Fellowship opportunities across India .

Responsibilities

  • Understand & exemplify the Indicorps service philosophy and mission
  • Research fellowship opportunities
  • Visit NGOs to understand their philosophy and work
  • Explain Indicorps’ service philosophy and program to potential partner NGOs
  • Assess viability of potential partner NGOs
  • Create sustainable projects in accordance with NGO needs, the Indicorps service philosophy, and our potential to contribute
  • Draft detailed project opportunities for web-based recruitment efforts
  • Regularly document interactions with NGOs and individuals
  • Establish the infrastructure for fellowship project (including suitable housing, safety considerations, healthcare services, and communications)
  • Create and draft project opportunities for the Senior Corps program, the upcoming Domestic Fellowship pilot program, and Indiserve platform
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications Required

  • College / University Degree and 2-3 years work experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in the Indian voluntary sector: Must understand development, voluntary sector management issues and have creative solutions to integrating human capital into existing programs
  • Good Communications skills, people skills, & flexibility
  • Language skills - English, Hindi, and one other local language preferred
  • Willingness and ability to travel, often to remote locations, by public transportation
  • Impeccable judgment (and instincts)
  • Must be willing to commit for two years ( 31 May 2005 to 31 Sept 2007 )

Work Environment

Supervised by the director of the Indicorps program. Work independently, but in conjunction with a group of dynamic young people from the project creation, project support, senior corps and domestic fellowship teams. The project team is likely to be out of station 2-3 weeks per month and work at least 50-60 hours per week (travel not included).

Notes: Indicorps is a program that encourages young professionals of Indian origin in the US , Canada , and UK to volunteer one year in service of their motherland through specifically-designed projects with local NGOs. The Indicorps Fellowship year runs from 15 August to 31 July. While there is always much to do, the project creation team is likely to be most busy in the months of October-February and July-August. All positions are based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat . Applicants should read the Indicorps website thoroughly before applying (www.indicorps.org).

Technology Strategy: help Indicorps better use technology (ranging from web tools to digital cameras to internal systems) in its efforts to empower people and communities across India and the Indian diaspora.

Ultimate Frisbee Coaches: help coach and train an Ultimate Frisbee league designed to encourage unity, teamwork, and integration of communities in Gujarat ; will also include parent outreach and solicitation of support from municipal bodies and local businesses

Global Volunteer Management: Indicorps has hundreds of people around the world who are interested in supporting Indicorps’ efforts by working in their local areas. Help us develop clear ways to engage volunteers to give their time to the Indicorps cause in their own communities.

Development Research: help Indicorps fellows research and integrate material into their final projects / white papers – a portion of the program that requires fellows to apply their experience and local lessons to broader global issues.

Media and Design: help the Indicorps Fellowship and all related programs create media and public relations material (including print, visual, audio/radio, Internet, and video) to promote service and civic engagement in India and the Indian diaspora.

Small Enterprise : engage young students who have gone through vocational training in small businesses that allow them to apply their skills and integrate themselves into the mainstream economy through entrepreneurship. (One such effort includes the development of a wireless hotspot business).

General Indicorps: help Indicorps manage its various programs, including preparation of upcoming fellowship projects, orientation planning, close-out of the current fellowship year, Volunteer Ahmedabad, etc. General interns will get a chance to understand and engage with broader efforts of Indicorps and better understand the energy behind Indicorps' efforts to inspire a movement of service within India and the diaspora.

 

Note:

Indicorps is primarily a volunteer-run organization that aims to inspire and engage people of Indian origin in service of India . Indicorps internship are UNPAID. Indicorps will cover work-related costs within India ; interns will be required to cover their own travel to/from India , health insurance, and all local living expenditures.
