Kherwadi Social Welfare Association - Bandra East - flood update

After the terrible disaster of July 26th, Kherwadi in Bandra East was one of the severely affected areas in Mumbai – flooding destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced thousands of people.

The Kherwadi Social Welfare Association, which is a 77 year old NGO that has been working in the slums of Bandra (E) and Khar (E), has been actively involved in the relief and rehabilitation work of the people affected, not only in Bandra (E), but also in Jogeshwari (E), which is the location of one of the Outreach Centres, for Vocational Training.

The plan to effectively assist the persons most affected was drawn up with the involvement of local core groups such as youth mandals and mahila mandals. Based on their ‘on-the-ground’ assessment and suggestions, our social workers worked out plans to provide relief to the poorest of the poor, who were identified through a detailed survey.

Our community workers believed that we should focus on immediate tasks such as distributing beddings, sarees and notebooks and providing foodgrains and essential commodities.

We have already provided relief to more than 700 families from Kherwadi, Khar, Santacruz and Jogeshwari East.

Our key concern now is that we need to focus on rehabilitation work; hundreds of daily wage earners have lost their means of livelihood (thellas, sewing machines, etc). It is necessary to ensure that the victims and their families are able to begin earning their livelihood as soon as possible. We would be helping them to purchase the assets that enable them to earn a livelihood. We plan to implement this scheme with the help of community core groups and our Yuva Parivartan members.

In addition, the recent warnings of a health epidemic have greatly alarmed our communities. We are planning to organize 4 medical camps in Kherwadi and 3 in Jogeshwari East during the coming two weeks.
