MSW container specifications
Collection and Transportation of M.S.W. is one of the prime obligatory
duties of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. There are about
6300 community collection points, which at present are attended
by Municipal vehicles and Private Contractor vehicles. These community
collection points are temporary storage points for Municipal Solid
Waste. At present, the community collection points have different
types of temporary storage facility as below:
1) 1 m3 Compactor container.
2) 1.1m3 Compactor container of EN Std.
3) 2.5 m3 1 Ton Cap. Closed container
4) 5.2 m3 1 Ton Cap. Closed container
5) Refuse Shed
6) Masonry Bins
7) Round Bins
8) Cement concrete bins
9) Open Dumps
10) Stationary Compactor
35% of the total waste collected & transported is the refuse
swept from roads and collected by street sweepers, which is deposited
at these community collection points. And about 15% of the total
waste collected and transported is by Door to Door (Property to
Property) collection.
The remaining Refuse is deposited by residents, traders, slum dwellers,
hawkers, etc. at the collection points.
Further there are various agencies in the wards for collection and
transportation of garbage and co-ordination and management of these
various agencies by ward staff is a difficult task. It is, therefore,
intended to have single agency for supply of various type of vehicles
for collection and transportation of M.S.W. on hire basis so that
the ward staff is able to co-ordinate and manage collection and
transportation of M.S.W. easily.
It is now intended that there shall be few type of containers for
temporary storage of M.S.W. instead of many types of containers
/ bins available at present. Also it is intended to standardize
the bins / containers so that deployment of vehicles & easy
liftage is possible. This will increase the productivity. This will
also avoid direct handling of refuse or double handling of refuse
as prohibited by MSW (M & H) Rules 2000. It is also intended
that the design and type of vehicles both municipal and private
contractors shall be similar. It is also intended that the societies,
buildings, complexes, will be instructed to provide similar standard
identical bins of same or lower capacity as per generation of garbage,
for Door to Door (Property to Property) collection of M.S.W.
The types & sizes of containers used to store and deliver waste
to the vehicles shall be one of the following types :
1. 120 Ltrs / 240 Ltrs. / 660 Ltrs.
HDPE Bins of EN STD.
2. 1100 Ltrs G.I./HDPE Bins of EN
STD.
